Palais d'été
Explore the Summer Palace, a vast complex of lakes, beautiful gardens and palaces in Beijing. Originally built in 1153, it became later an imperial garden, during the Qing Dynasty. The palace covers an area of 2.9 square kilometers, although 75% of that area is water. The architecture of the Summer Palace is inspired by southern China, with more than 3000 ancient Chinese buildings.
In 1998, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, declaring the Summer Palace a "masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design." The natural landscape of hills and open water is combined with man-made elements such as pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges to form a harmonious whole of outstanding aesthetic value.
